Achillion Sports initially entered the sports equipment distribution market by acquiring the “Top Hoops” basketball website. Recognizing the potential to broaden its market, Achillion Sports expanded its product line to include specialized sports equipment, such as professional soccer goals and volleyball systems.

The company's portfolio grew as it partnered with over a dozen manufacturers, eventually diversifying to include a full line of recreational equipment.

This case study delves into Achillion Sports' strategic decision to evaluate the licensing of a laser-guided first-down marking solution. This initiative signifies the company's latest effort to weave innovative technology into the sports experience, underscoring its unwavering dedication to innovation and growth.

Engagement

Answering: What is the business case and business objectives?

Actual Outcomes’ initial engagement with Achillion Sports involved understanding the business objectives and working within a tight timeframe. Recognizing the importance of efficiency, we proposed a viability study before engaging in the design and development of the solution.

The Actual Outcomes approach delivered professional insights without significant capital outlay or protracted engagements. Throughout the study, we meticulously reviewed the applicable patent and its claims. Our objective was to assess product viability and potential market success.

Fortunately, our analysis disclosed that the patent's design was not a viable product, containing several unrealistic elements for the intended use and customer needs. Nevertheless, Achillion Sports was pleased with how we proactively addressed concerns and devised alternative solutions while determining viability.

By seeking to understand the customer need and the patented solution's approach to addressing this need, we demonstrated how redefining the product could pivot it to a better fit at a much lower delivery cost. Our commitment to customer needs and the analysis of product feasibility highlighted potential roadblocks and methods for overcoming them. By thoroughly examining the problem and establishing clear objective analysis of the solutions, we could assist in putting together a product analysis and viable product architecture that we believe would delight customers, require a lower investment, and maintain our client's focus on expanding their offerings.

Alternative Approaches

When we realized the product as defined was not viable, we pivoted. By understanding the necessity to provide solutions and not just answers, we proactively suggested alternative products, including rapid prototypes, aligned with the client's objectives. These alternatives unlocked new avenues for innovation and product development.

Conclusion

This case study illustrates the effectiveness of lean validation, which delivers immediate value by reducing waste. Offering alternative solutions underscored our commitment to their success, even when faced with unforeseen challenges.
